Background:
I grew up in North Florida where I was constantly fishing or hunting with my father and friends. I went to a community college and then took some classes at CSU before being offered a job at Dart International. I have had a myriad of jobs, some of which include free lance writer, photographer, working at Bear Archery, managing an archery shop, Dart International Field Operations Manager as well as guiding for other outfitters before starting my own business in Colorado. I live on a ranch in southern Colorado with my wife and three boys, menasiry of animals including one ugly cat and some fainting goats. I wear a lot of hats today, all of which were goals of mine. I’m an outfitter and guide hunters, I also have a commercial hay operation, raise a few cows, and am an outdoor communicator on TV, print and social media platforms.
When did you say, "Screw it, I'm Outy" and choose the path you did?
When I left Dart International (an interactive target system company) to run my outfitting business full time in my early thirties, about 22 years ago. I wanted to see if I could make a living guiding hunters, doing what I and they loved everyday. I haven't looked back since.
What were some obstacles you had trying to reach your goals?
The biggest obstacle was leaving a safe salaried position, with benefits, and risking it all to give my dream a shot. At the end of the day, you just have to go for it!
What advice would you give someone who's just starting out wanting to pursue the same path as you?
Hang out with people that are smarter than you and know more about the career that you are pursuing, a mentor so-to-speak. I was very fortunate to have some very great mentors in the outdoor and hunting community.
What are your future plans?
I hope to continue to grow this outfitting business as well as our commercial hay and cattle business. Looking forward to the boys hopefully carrying on this business we’ve grown. And of course, spending more time hunting and fishing with my family and friends is always at the top of my list. I’m looking forward to getting more involved in helping grow and protect the sport I care so much about.
